Fire Prevention
  • Plan at least 2 exits out of your home from each room.
  • Have pathways to the exits free of clutter.
  • Keep keys available if doors are locked.
  • Install smoke detectors on each level of your house.
  • Check batteries in each smoke alarm monthly, replace as needed.
  • Never smoke in bed
  • Never leave a burning cigarette, cigar or pipe unattended.
  • When emptying ashtrays, make sure that the ashes are cool and there are no burning embers.
  • Keep matches, ashtrays, cigarettes, cigars and pipes out of children’s reach. Nicotine is poisonous when ingested by young children.
  • Know the phone number of your local fire department and keep it posted by the telephone. Keep telephone within reach if unable to walk easily to the telephone.
  • Place space heaters away from furniture and draperies, infants and children.
  • If a fire extinguisher is available, know where it is, how to use it, have it readily accessible.
  • Notify your local fire department of a disability requiring special needs.
  • No smoking in the presence of oxygen tanks.
  • Oxygen tanks and concentrators should be placed away from fireplaces, furnaces, space heaters, stoves and ovens.
