Disaster and Emergency Preparedness
  • Plan how to move patient to a safe area if safety is threatened.
  • Move equipment to safety that is health or life supporting (oxygen, suction, dressing, supplies, medications, IV pumps).
  • Keep a list of disaster / emergency phone numbers readily available.
  • Know how to use back up batteries and manual back up systems of all medical equipment, if no electricity is available.
  • Know tornado safety precautions if a warning is issued:
    • Move to a pre-designated sheltered area such as basement, interior room, or hallway on the lowest floor.
    • Get under a sturdy piece of furniture.
    • Stay away from windows
    • Listen to radio or television for information
  • Keep emergency supplies on hand:
    • Flashlight
    • Portable radio
    • Canned foods and bottled water, medicines and medical supplies
